Featured Artist Friday: Foreign Sunsets
In this week’s Featured Artist Friday we take a look at Chicago pop punk band Foreign Sunsets. Foreign Sunsets is a four piece band that consists of a close friend and three brothers.
The band’s lead guitarist is Mando Ramon with lead vocalist Jo Robledo as the other guitarist in the band. The oldest and youngest Robledo brothers form the band’s rhythm section, with Ulysses on bass and vocals and Jon on the drums.
“When we play we bounce off one another and acknowledge each other,” said Jo. “It's a lot like Dr Pepper; a bunch of different things coming together to make one really good thing. Some people like it and some people don't.”
Foreign Sunsets pull their inspiraiton from a broad spectrum of musical genres such as pop punk, jpop, indie rock, jrock, and alternative. The band writes music that tells the story of all the experiences each member has had throughout their lifetimes.
Their songs center around happy stories of great times spent with those close to them and fond memories of childhood and around the sad tales of lost family, lost friends, and lost love. Foreign Sunsets writes their music with the intent of being an outlet for anyone listening to their music.
“We've all had some struggles in the past,” said Jon. “With music we’ve found people we can relate to, whether it be the bands themselves, friends we've made at shows, or friends we have connected with through music. To be able to connect with others would be the main goal for us as a band.”
The band is currently signed to Siren Records and released their single “Rampant” this past May. Foreign Sunsets has music can be found on Spotify, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud and they are currently in the process of writing their first album.
“We have a broad spectrum of influences, which I believe is crucial when it comes to our band,” said Ulysses. “Our writing process usually consists of someone bringing a piece to the table, then everyone building off of it or staying up until 3-4 in the morning until the song comes to us.”
Foreign Sunsets’ next show will be Friday, October 27th at Camp/Us with fellow Chicago bands Loser, which featured for Foreign Sunsets guitarist Aaron Loss, and The Off Days, which also features Ulysses on bass guitar. Their next show after that will be a celebration of Jon’s 21st birthday on November 3rd at The Mutiny in Logan Square.
Next week’s featured artist will be Joliet rock band IDK. Make sure to follow ODMG on Facebook and Instagram for all of our newest content and if you haven’t already, head over to our YouTube channel to check out our newest video, Nikki Gallup’s Paint and Jam.
